Prez Sez

Our daffodils are blooming and the horses are starting to shed their winter coats. But winter has made a comeback! That is a good thing, we certainly need the rain and snow. Zia, the new Border Collie pup, had a great time racing around playing with the fluffy white stuff!

We have some new rides and events this year and hope you will all be participating. The first rides are starting in April. The first one is a ride at Pardee, April 16th, led by Diana Moreci and the second ride is the Poker Ride at Peoria on April 30th led by John Watts.

Our new website (shown at right) should be up and running very soon. It will be more user friendly and easier to navigate. A huge Thank You to Diana Moreci, Linda Post, and Website Designer David Bellard for all their hard work getting the new website going.

Happy Trails!

Daffodils and Vaccinations

A serious outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV-1) at a Bay Area stable just two months ago is a reminder that it is time to start thinking about vaccinations for your horses.

Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is one of a large group of DNA viruses that causes potentially serious disease in horses and other species. EHV-1 has four forms, causing respiratory infection, neonatal infection, abortion, or neurological signs. The last form can cause a condition known as Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), which attacks the spinal cord and brain and can be fatal, as it was during the recent outbreak.

Annual equine vaccines generally include a combination vaccine that protects your horse from Tetanus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, and West Nile virus. These are diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes, except in the case of tetanus which is found in the environment. Even if your horse is stabled alone, it can still be at risk.

Depending on your horse’s lifestyle and risks, your veterinarian may advise the following vaccinations. In California, these include the following:

  1. Vaccination for viral upper respiratory diseases – Rhinopneumonitis (caused by EHV 1 and EHV 4) and Influenza should be considered for horses who are transported and have nose-to-nose contact or shared water with strange horses. Immunity provided by vaccination is short-lived, so vaccinated horses should receive a booster every six months.
  2. Strangles intranasal vaccine should be considered for horses that have not had the disease before and who have a risk of coming into contact with the bacteria through nose-to-nose contact or shared water and equipment. Some horses will shed the bacteria even without showing any signs of disease.
  3. Rabies is considered a core vaccine because it is fatal and can be transmitted to humans from infected horses. It is spread by bats, raccoons, coyotes, and many other mammals.
  4. Owners should wait an additional few weeks after the vaccination or booster for the horse to be considered protected. Especially for horses receiving a a first-time vaccination. Plan to vaccinate well ahead of any events that you are attending.

Please have a conversation with your veterinarian about which vaccines your horse should receive and at which time of year.
